Exam Performance
At Gatehouse, pupils are assessed using nationally standardised assessments alongside ongoing teacher judgement.
This enables us to track attainment, monitor progress and understand each pupil’s academic development over time.
Our assessment data shows that pupils consistently achieve above national averages and make strong progress
from their individual starting points.
Understanding Standardised Scores
- 100 = national average
- 110+ = above national expectations
- 120+ = significantly above national expectations
Because scores are standardised nationally, this allows us to compare pupil performance with others of the same age across the UK.
Attainment (Years 1–5)
Pupils at Gatehouse typically achieve standardised scores in the range of 110–120+ in both English and mathematics,
compared to a national average of 100. This places outcomes consistently above national expectations,
with many cohorts achieving well above average performance.
Progress and Value Added
Pupils complete CAT4 assessments, which provide a baseline measure of cognitive ability and expected attainment.
By comparing this with outcomes in English and mathematics, we can evaluate the progress pupils make over time.
Our data shows that pupils’ actual attainment is consistently higher than their CAT4 baseline predictions.
Typically, pupils achieve outcomes 3–6 standardised score points above expectation,
demonstrating strong value added across the school.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
In Reception, children are assessed against the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile. A
Good Level of Development (GLD) indicates that a child is working at the expected level across key areas of learning.
Nationally, around two-thirds of children achieve a GLD. Outcomes at Gatehouse are typically
in line with or above national averages, with variation reflecting the natural range of attainment within a cohort.

Overall Summary
- Pupils achieve strongly in nationally benchmarked assessments.
- Attainment is consistently above national averages in English and mathematics.
- Pupils make positive progress, regularly exceeding expectations based on baseline assessments.
- As a non-selective school, outcomes reflect strong progress across a broad range of starting points.
Together, this data reflects a structured and supportive academic environment in which pupils make sustained progress over time.
