At Gatehouse, Humanities, comprising History and Geography, is taught from Year 3 onwards. Lessons are carefully planned and rotated throughout the year to ensure an even balance across both subjects. Our curriculum covers a broad range of historical and geographical topics and aims to equip pupils with key knowledge, skills and understanding that support learning across the wider curriculum.

Developing Core Skills

In Humanities lessons, pupils are taught essential study and enquiry skills including:

  • Map reading and geographical investigation

  • Exploring historical artefacts

  • Asking thoughtful, evidence-based questions

  • Analysing sources and forming balanced arguments

  • Critical thinking and informed decision-making

These skills are developed through structured tasks, independent research, and project work, allowing pupils to take ownership of their learning and build academic independence.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Gatehouse, we believe real-world experiences are key to deepening pupils’ understanding. Educational trips and visits are an integral part of our Humanities provision, helping to bring historical and geographical learning to life. These experiences enrich classroom study and provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to connect with the past and explore their environment.

Cross-Curricular Connections

Humanities also provides a meaningful context for developing wider academic skills. Pupils practise:

  • Note-taking and information gathering

  • Public speaking and presentation skills

  • Written communication through report writing and evaluations

We also incorporate drama and role play, using historical sources to inspire creative and collaborative learning experiences.

Preparing for the Future

Through our broad and engaging Humanities curriculum, pupils gain a deeper understanding of the world around them—past and present. By encouraging curiosity, critical thinking and informed discussion, we help prepare them to be thoughtful, informed and responsible citizens of the future.
