At Gatehouse, we aim to inspire and support every pupil to reach their full potential. We believe that all children, regardless of ability or attainment level, should have access to a rich and inclusive mathematics curriculum.

Our approach to teaching mathematics is designed to ensure that pupils develop not only strong foundational skills, but also the confidence and curiosity to explore mathematical ideas in depth.

Our Aims in Mathematics

At Gatehouse, we strive to:

  • Develop every child’s skills, knowledge, and understanding of key mathematical concepts
  • Enable pupils to think critically and creatively, to exercise initiative, and to explain their reasoning using accurate mathematical vocabulary
  • Provide opportunities for children to apply their mathematical skills in a variety of real-life and cross-curricular contexts
  • Foster confidence in problem-solving, encouraging perseverance, logical thinking, and collaboration
  • Help pupils see the relevance of mathematics in everyday life and prepare them for the next stage of their education, including 11+ entrance examinations

Enrichment and Digital Learning

Upper Junior pupils have the opportunity to take part in national mathematics competitions, helping them to develop confidence, resilience, and a love of challenge beyond the classroom.

To support and enhance learning, we make use of a variety of high-quality digital platforms, including Mathletics, Atom Learning, and Times Table Rockstars. These tools offer personalised practice, support fluency, and allow children to consolidate and extend their mathematical understanding both in school and at home.
