At Gatehouse, our PSHE programme is designed to help children grow into confident, independent, and responsible young people. We believe that learning about yourself, understanding others, and making a positive impact on your community are all key to preparing pupils for life beyond the classroom.

Our PSHE curriculum reflects emerging issues, ensuring pupils are equipped with the skills they need for the world today and tomorrow. This includes:

  • Building digital resilience.
  • Understanding online safety.
  • Navigating the complexities of modern life with confidence.

Our RSHE provision is carefully crafted to focus on positive, healthy relationships, respect, and consent, giving pupils the tools to make informed and responsible choices.

PSHE in Everyday School Life

PSHE is not just a stand-alone subject; it is woven into daily school life and across the curriculum. From lessons and assemblies to extracurricular activities and community events, pupils are encouraged to connect what they learn with real-life experiences, helping them see the relevance of PSHE in everything they do.

Pupil Voice & Leadership

Pupil voice is at the heart of our approach. Through the School Council, the House system, our Pupil Leadership Team, and Year 6 Ambassadors, pupils are encouraged to:

  • Share their ideas.
  • Take on leadership roles.
Play an active part in shaping school life.

These opportunities help children understand democracy, responsibility, and the value of teamwork.

Personal Development

We want our pupils to:

  • Recognise their own strengths.
  • Develop resilience.
  • Work collaboratively with others.

By reflecting on their experiences, they learn to make informed choices, build healthy relationships, and navigate the social, moral, and cultural challenges of growing up in today’s world.

Opportunities Beyond the Classroom

Leadership & Contribution

Pupil leadership opportunities are central to our approach:

  • School Council, House system, Pupil Leadership Team, Year 6 Ambassadors, and Wellbeing Ambassadors all give children a voice in school life.
  • Wellbeing Ambassadors support the emotional health and wellbeing of their peers, promoting a positive and inclusive school environment while developing empathy, listening, and problem-solving skills.
House activities, competitions, and charity events build responsibility, teamwork, and organisational skills.

Developing Key Life Skills

Through leadership roles and community contributions, pupils develop:

  • Public speaking.
  • Negotiation.
  • Conflict resolution.
  • Effective communication.

These experiences enable pupils to recognise their strengths, build resilience, collaborate effectively, and apply their learning to the wider world.
