At Gatehouse School, Music is an integral part of our curriculum and school culture. From Nursery to Year 6, pupils develop creativity, confidence and musical skills through a wide range of opportunities to sing, play instruments, compose and perform. Whether discovering music for the first time or developing their talents through specialist tuition and ensembles, every child is encouraged to explore and enjoy music.
Drama plays an important role in bringing learning to life at Gatehouse School. Closely linked to each year group’s English curriculum, lessons encourage pupils to explore stories, characters and themes through role-play, improvisation and performance.
Not every Drama lesson leads to a final production. Instead, pupils develop valuable skills that support their learning across the curriculum and beyond, including:
From Nursery onwards, pupils have opportunities to rehearse and perform in our Wallbank Hall, supported by modern lighting and sound facilities.
Every class presents at least one whole-school assembly during the academic year, often sharing learning from PSHE or other curriculum subjects through storytelling, drama and creative presentations.
These experiences help children become comfortable speaking and performing in front of an audience, while encouraging them to celebrate their achievements and support one another.
Our annual programme of performances, productions and competitions gives pupils opportunities to develop their talents, build confidence and share their creativity with the wider school community.

From their first performances in Nursery to major productions in the Upper Juniors, children are encouraged to embrace new challenges, work collaboratively and take pride in their achievements.
From Year 3, pupils have the opportunity to take LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) Communication and Performance tuition, working towards graded group acting examinations.
These sessions provide opportunities to develop interpretation, vocal expression, communication and performance techniques, while building confidence and encouraging an appreciation of literature, poetry and drama.
Working towards a recognised qualification also gives pupils a rewarding opportunity to demonstrate their progress and celebrate their achievements.
Drama at Gatehouse is about much more than learning lines or performing in front of an audience. It provides children with opportunities to find their voice, express ideas, understand others and develop the confidence to take on new challenges.
Whether participating in classroom activities, presenting an assembly or performing in a school production, pupils develop communication, creativity, resilience and teamwork — skills that will benefit them throughout their education and beyond.
