Background and Ethos
"An outstanding school" - ISI inspection report June 2011
Gatehouse School is an Independent Co-educational School for girls and boys aged 3 to 11. We are part of the Independent Schools' Association and of the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools which are members of the Independent Schools' Council.
Founded in May 1948 by Phyllis Wallbank, a pioneer of educational development, in the gatehouse of St Bartholomew of the Great Priory Church, West Smithfield. The School was then a pioneer of much that is now generally accepted in education. Gatehouse's policy is:
Children of any race, colour, creed, background and intellect shall be accepted as students and work side by side without streaming or any kind of segregation, with the aim that each child shall get to know and love God, and to develop their own uniqueness of personality to enable them to appreciate the world and the world to appreciate them.
Gatehouse is now located in Sewardstone Road close to Victoria Park, where it continues to follow the education philosophy of Phyllis Wallbank.
Old members may wish to note that the Phyllis Wallbank Educational Trust has now achieved its objective " To establish a scholarship to be called the 'Phyllis Wallbank Scholarship' to be awarded to any former pupil of the Gatehouse School attending University in the U.K. or Republic of Ireland." With immediate effect the sum of £6000 per annum total is available to any former pupil or pupils who fulfills their criteria; details available on their website. After Gatehouse
Gatehouse pupils gain entrance to a variety of senior schools, both in London and further afield.
